A mountain of millennial secrets. Sulaiman-Too

Imagine a majestic silhouette towering over the emerald Fergana Valley. This is Sulaiman Too, a sacred mountain that has served as a mute witness to history and a spiritual guide for travelers for one and a half millennia. Its outlines are an integral part of the landscape of the ancient city of Osh, once a busy hub of the Great Silk Road.

Sulaiman Too is not just a mountain. It is a unique spiritual landscape where pre-Islamic beliefs and traditions of Islam are intertwined. Its five peaks preserve the memory of centuries: here you will find:

  • ancient places of worship (17 of them are still in active use today);
  • mysterious caves with petroglyphs (101 places with rock carvings of people, animals and mysterious geometric symbols have been recorded);
  • two reconstructed mosques of the XVI century, harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape.

Hiking trails laid through the centuries connect these shrines, inviting the traveler to make a spiritual journey through time.

Locals believe that the energy of the mountain has healing powers. It is believed that places of worship help:

  • to get rid of infertility;
  • Relieve headaches and back pain;
  • gain longevity.

A special role is assigned to the cult of the horse, which is organically woven into the general fabric of beliefs. And the shape of the mountain – a single peak towering over four others – echoes images from the Avesta and Vedic traditions, giving the place a sacred meaning.

Sulaiman Too is the most complete example of a sacred mountain in Central Asia, where the material evidence of cult practices (from pre-Islamic times to the present) has been preserved in amazing integrity. However, her greatness is fragile.:

  • The impressive shape dominating the valley makes the mountain vulnerable to new development.;
  • The preservation of places of worship and the trails connecting them directly affects the integrity of the site.

To protect this unique heritage, the Site:

  • Management Council has been established to monitor the implementation of special plans;
  • A map with the boundaries of the buffer zone has been developed;
  • Work is underway on a Master plan for the urban development of Osh, which takes into account the need to preserve the visual and spiritual appearance of the mountain.

Sulaiman Too is not just a point on the map. It is a living testimony of centuries-old history, where every stone, every path and every petroglyph tells its own story. By visiting this place, you will touch the soul of Central Asia, which has preserved its primordial power and mystery.
