New Rules for Carrying Power Banks on Aircraft

From early 2026, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has introduced updated rules for carrying power banks and devices with lithium batteries.

Under the new requirements, power banks are prohibited in checked baggage and must be carried only in hand luggage. This is due to the risk of fire in the cargo hold, where an incident may be difficult to detect in time.

Requirements for using power banks on board have also changed. They must not be charged from in-seat power outlets or used to charge other devices during the flight.

Storage rules are another key point. Power banks must not be placed in overhead bins. They should be kept under the seat in front of you or in the seat-back pocket.

There are also limits on capacity. Only power banks with a capacity of up to 160 Wh are permitted for carriage.

According to IATA, nearly half of air passengers travel with a power bank, yet many are still unaware that these devices are not allowed in checked baggage. The new rules aim to reduce risks and make air travel safer.
