Located on the territory of the Charyn National Park, the canyon opens the gates to the amazing world of pristine nature for travelers. The park was established on February 23, 2004 with the noble goal of preserving unique natural and geological sites for future generations.
The protected lands hide many wonders. The ash grove, a living open–air museum, is located in the Sarytogai tract. The Sogdian ash grows here, a relic tree that survived the Paleogene epoch. The age of this grove is about 5 million years old, and it is rightfully considered a unique natural monument. The second such grove has been preserved only in North America. Today, the ash grove is protected by UNESCO – and this is just one of the many treasures of the park.
But the main miracle that attracts travelers remains the Charyn Canyon itself. Its scale is amazing:
- the depth is 200 m.;
- the height of the sheer cliffs is from 150 to 300 m.;
- The sedimentary rocks are up to 12 million years old.
As the sun sets, the canyon is transformed. The rocks flash with scarlet, pink and orange hues, creating an indescribable play of light and shadow. In this solemn silence, only the sound of the rushing Charyn River crashing against stone walls reminds of the inexorable passage of time.
Special attention should be paid to the Valley of Castles, a section of the canyon where nature has created fantastic rock formations. Their bizarre shapes resemble towers erected by unknown architects. The length of the Valley of Castles exceeds 2 km, and its width varies from 20 to 80 m, opening up new angles for admiring glances.
Charyn Canyon is not only a geological phenomenon, but also a true paradise for biologists and nature lovers. Here:
- There are more than 1,500 plant species (17 of them are listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan).;
- There are 62 species of mammals.;
- 103 species of birds nest there.;
- There are 25 species of reptiles.
All conditions have been created for tourists in the park to make their acquaintance with this amazing place unforgettable. Experienced guides will guide you along the most scenic routes, uncover the secrets of the canyon and share fascinating stories about its past.
Charyn Canyon is not just a point on the map. This is a place where every stone breathes history, and every sunset becomes a work of art. Here, nature reminds us of its eternal beauty and power.
