Originally scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia, the Games were moved to Kazakhstan due to preparation timelines and the scale of the required projects.
The agreement was signed in Milan as part of the events coinciding with the 2026 Winter Olympics. The document was signed by Gennady Golovkin, President of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, and Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia.
Almaty boasts fully equipped arenas and tracks, as well as extensive experience in hosting major international competitions. The city previously hosted the Winter Asian Games in 2011.
The relocation of the Winter Asian Games opens up new opportunities for the region. The event is expected to draw attention from the global sporting community and tourists alike. It will also underscore Kazakhstan’s status as a country with a well-developed winter sports infrastructure.
