The journey from Tashkent to Malaysia’s tropical shores has just become shorter. In October 2025, AirAsia X (AAX) airline launched its first-ever direct flight between Tashkent and Kuala Lumpur, opening a convenient and affordable air bridge between Central Asia and some of Southeast Asia’s most captivating destinations.
Thanks to the new route, travelers can now explore Malaysia’s tropical islands, jungles, and culinary heritage – a country where culture, flavor, and nature blend into a seamless kaleidoscope of experiences. With AirAsia Fly-Thru connections from Kuala Lumpur, passengers can easily reach over 130 destinations – from ASEAN countries to Japan, Korea, and Australia.
Malaysia – The Leader in Hospitality and Flavor
According to the Global Muslim Travel Index 2025, Malaysia has maintained its title as the world’s most Muslim-friendly travel destination for the tenth consecutive year. The country was also recognized as one of the leaders in halal culinary tourism at the Halal in Travel Awards 2025.
A New Bridge of Cooperation
The launch of the new route is part of a broader initiative to strengthen tourism ties between the two countries. On the occasion, AirAsia X and the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Tourism Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting bilateral tourism, marketing collaboration, and cultural exchange.
Datuk Kamarudin bin Meranun, Co-founder of AirAsia and Independent Executive Chairman of Capital A Group, noted:
“This historic milestone symbolizes a bridge that brings Malaysia and Uzbekistan closer together. By expanding its presence in Central Asia, AirAsia X proudly supports Malaysia’s tourism agenda ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. This event highlights Malaysia’s growing role in strengthening regional connections and reflects our shared commitment to developing new routes that promote affordable travel, economic growth, and cultural exchange.”
He was joined by Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, who added:
“AirAsia X has always sought to expand its network of long-haul routes, making travel more accessible while benefitting communities and economies across Central and Southeast Asia. This year alone, we have carried over 80,000 passengers between the two regions. Kuala Lumpur is recognized by OAG as the world’s largest low-cost carrier hub, and now thousands of travelers will have seamless access to more than 130 destinations through the Fly-Thru network. This new route strengthens Malaysia’s tourism agenda and reinforces the country’s position as ASEAN’s main air gateway to new regions.”
Two Worlds – One Inspiration
Adding symbolic meaning to the occasion, H.E. Ilham Tua bin Ilyas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to Uzbekistan, shared:
“The tropical heart of Southeast Asia and the historic crossroads of Central Asia – Malaysia and Uzbekistan are now closer than ever. With the launch of the first AirAsia X flight between Kuala Lumpur and Tashkent, we are opening a new chapter of connectivity and cooperation, while preserving a deep sense of mutual closeness. United by shared values of hospitality, respect, and cultural pride, our countries each embody diversity in their own way. Malaysia – with its modern culture, vibrant charm, and pristine beaches; Uzbekistan – with the enduring spirit of the Great Silk Road, rich heritage, and great thinkers. Together, we are paving the way to bring our peoples closer, strengthen friendship, and build a bright common future.”
