Location of the Spring

The hot spring of Bibi Fatima-i Zahro lies in the Wakhan Valley, near the village of Yamchun in the Ishkashim district. Set more than 3,000 meters above sea level, it is surrounded by a small forest, and its crystal-clear waters are fed by glaciers flowing down from the peaks of the Pamirs.

Entrance and Cave

From the outside, the spring is almost unnoticeable. The experience begins at the entrance, where visitors are greeted by a sculptural figure of a woman, her sleeves streaming with water. The passage into the cave is designed as a symbolic womb, leading to the grotto where the hot spring emerges.

Ritual and Belief

A special ritual belongs to this place. Visitors enter the cave, make a wish, and search the warm water for a small stone. It is said that finding one brings good fortune. Many women come here with the hope of conceiving a child.

The Legend of Ali and Bibi Fatima-i Zahro

One legend tells of a battle between Ali and the rulers of the fortresses of Yamchun, Kah-Kaha, and Isor. After the fight, Ali thrust his sword into the ground, and hot water sprang forth. Later, Bibi Fatima-i Zahro came to the spring and spread her sleeves to wash them, and people say this is why the cave resembles open sleeves.

An Ancient Story of the Spring

Another, older legend recounts a time when the valley suffered from drought. A woman wandered through the barren land carrying her thirsty child. Bibi Fatima-i Zahro struck the ground with her staff, and a spring appeared at that very spot, forever changing the fate of the land.

Journey to the Spring

On the way to the spring, travelers often stop at Yamchun Fortress, which offers sweeping views of the valley and the mountains of Afghanistan. A journey to Bibi Fatima-i Zahro brings together dramatic landscapes, warm waters, and the living legends of the Pamirs.
